The paper examines the deep change in the population’s age structure occurred in the last decades in Italy, in terms of “economic weight of ageing”. In particular, by focusing on the period 1995-2020, we intend to examine the evolution of the retired subgroup of elderly people by gender and region. We use INPS (Italian National Welfare Institute) and ISTAT (Institute for National Statistics) databases and select people aged 60 and over from 1995 to 2020 in order to identify persons receiving a pension, their province of residence, their individual characteristics, and retirement features. We conduct a descriptive analysis by considering four broad geographic areas (North-West, North-East, Centre, South and Islands) and by splitting the sample in the following pension type categories: those receiving a pension from work, those receiving the Survivor’s pension, those receiving other types of pension, and those who are not given a pension. Also, Poisson regression techniques are employed to investigate the evolution of Retired Population by demographic characteristics, type of pension, and geographic area. Preliminary results show that both in 1995 and in 2020, the share of old people receiving a pension from work is higher than the proportion of those receiving other pension types in all geographic areas. However, great differences by gender and geographic area still exist over the observation period. In the next steps of the analysis, we will consider all the twenty Italian regions, will include all the available pension types and calculate the the amount of the perceived pension.
