The increasing presence of foreign citizens in Italy has determined the growth of acquisitions of Italian citizenship but there still is a substantial lack of knowledge about the migration patterns of international migrants after the acquisitions of Italian citizenship. This analysis wants to shed light on the mobility of those who have become Italian citizens both considering the decision to migrate abroad and to move internally after the acquisition of the Italian citizenship. Data come from the linkage between the information about citizenship acquisitions collected by Istat and Ministry of the Interior and the survey about registrations and cancellations due to a change of residence. The information in the dataset relates to the citizenship acquisitions granted in Italy between 2011 and 2019. Preliminary analyses based on multinomial logistic regression model show that mobility of those who have acquired Italian citizenship is high, both internally and abroad. In general, new Italian citizens show a high level of mobility, closer to foreigners than to native-born. Factors such as the type of acquisition and the country of origin are able to shape the migration trajectories of migrants even after the acquisition of the Italian citizenship. Observing internal mobility of citizens with a migration background may shed light on the integration process of migrants and give relevant suggestions about the link between migration policies and the procedures for granting citizenship.
